There is no safe promise that every ETA will finish in the same number of hours. Straightforward applications may be decided quickly, while referrals, identity inconsistencies, document checks, weekends and public holidays can extend the wait. Plan in working days and add a buffer before any non-refundable departure.
What causes avoidable delay?
- Passport number, nationality or birth-date errors
- A blurred, cropped or wrong-person upload
- Travel purpose that does not match the selected category
- Duplicate applications submitted while the first remains active
- An email address the traveller cannot access
Pending and referred cases
Pending means a final result has not yet been issued. A referral notice means the case requires the follow-up described in that notice; it is not automatically a refusal. Keep the reference, acknowledgement, passport and travel evidence ready. Do not create another paid request merely because the first result is not immediate.
When to apply
Apply after the passport and core itinerary are stable but well before travel. Leave time to replace an unreadable file or answer a request. Same-day or airport-day applications carry unnecessary risk because an estimated processing window is not a guarantee.
After approval
Compare the name, passport number, nationality and validity details with the passport immediately. Keep a digital and printed copy and travel with the same document used in the application.
