An ETA is obtained for travel and initial admission. An extension concerns permission to remain longer after entry. Submitting a second pre-travel ETA does not extend the stay already granted in Sri Lanka.
When to begin
Start before the permitted stay expires. Do not wait for the final day because document questions, payment or appointment availability can create delay. Check the admission record and count from the date and conditions actually granted.
Free-ETA nationalities
The 2026 official notice says travellers who received the free 30-day tourist ETA may apply for an extension upon payment of the applicable visa fee. Free initial processing therefore should not be described as a free extended stay.
Information to prepare
Keep the passport, current ETA or admission evidence, Sri Lanka address, local contact details, onward plans and the reason for requesting more time. Additional evidence depends on the case and current immigration process.
After submission
Keep proof that the request was filed and follow the official extension channel. Do not assume that submitting a request automatically changes the existing expiry date; rely on the permission actually issued.
