From 25 May 2026 the official list names Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States. Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore have separate reciprocal arrangements.
Free does not mean no ETA
The Department states that travellers in the scheme must still obtain an ETA before arrival. The government tourist ETA is processed without its usual charge; a private preparation or review service remains separate and must disclose its own total before payment.
Duration and entry
The scheme provides 30 days for the listed 40 countries, with double entry and only the balance of the original period available on the second arrival. Maldivian nationals receive 90 days under the bilateral arrangement. An extension beyond the free period attracts the applicable fee.
Which passport controls?
Nationality is determined by the passport used for the application and travel, not the traveller’s residence. Dual nationals should select one passport and use it consistently.
What the free scheme does not cover
It does not automatically cover business, employment, study or specialist activity. It also does not guarantee border admission. Check the selected purpose and current official notice before departure.
