Tourist ETA purposes

The official short-visit list covers sightseeing, holidays, visits to friends and relatives, qualifying medical or Ayurvedic treatment, and listed sporting or cultural participation. It does not authorize paid or unpaid employment.

Business ETA purposes

Business activity includes meetings and negotiations, conferences, workshops, seminars, short training, symposiums and specified religious or artistic events. Evidence of the host, organization, event and planned activity should be available. Some business permissions are handled through an overseas mission or the Department rather than an ordinary tourist workflow.

How to choose for a mixed trip

Choose the category that describes the substantive reason for entering Sri Lanka. Adding a weekend holiday does not turn a commercial meeting into tourism. Conversely, answering work email during a holiday does not automatically define the trip as business. When the activity involves journalism, political groups, NGOs or specialist work, use official case-specific guidance.

Fees and entry conditions

The government fee schedule distinguishes tourist and business categories. The 2026 free scheme applies to qualifying tourist ETAs for named nationalities; it should not be assumed to make a business permission free. Entry count and permitted duration must also match the issued approval.

Before selecting a category

1. Write the main activity in one sentence.
2. Identify who in Sri Lanka is hosting or benefiting from it.
3. Collect invitation or event proof if relevant.
4. Choose the matching route before payment.
